Esther Perbandt's new "ALLES VON HIER" jacket
An extraordinary project by Berlin designer Esther Perbandt goes by the name ALLES VON HIER — "Everything from Here".
It is a strictly limited edition of 30 jackets, made entirely in Germany: the tailoring and, with a single exception explained below, every material too. Think of it as a practical experiment: what happens when a supply chain is radically shortened, and the extra effort and cost this brings are knowingly accepted?
Despite the fashion industry's ever-present sustainability debates, it remains shaped by mass production, overproduction and globalised low-wage labour. For over 22 years, Esther Perbandt has consciously set herself against this current. With her timeless, exclusively black "Eternal Collection", produced in small runs in Berlin and Poland, she has consistently pursued a design philosophy beyond short-lived trends.
With ALLES VON HIER, she goes a step further: a garment not only sewn in Germany, but whose materials – fabric, lining, sewing thread, zips, padding, press studs – all come from German production too.
Testing an industry against its own reality
Producing a single garment entirely in Germany turned out to be harder than it sounds, and the difficulty started with the materials themselves. The cotton fabric Perbandt has used for ten years, once woven in Germany, is now being discontinued; she secured the project by buying up the last remaining stock. The lining follows the same pattern, another casualty of German weaving.
The zips were more straightforward: for these, she drew on her long-standing collaboration with Heiligenstädter Reißverschlüsse, which still manufactures in Germany. The sewing thread is recycled and also made in Germany. Even the elastic bands demanded extensive research before a suitable German-made quality could be found.
The padding proved the hardest challenge of all. Conventionally made from inexpensive polyester, it is produced almost exclusively in Asia. After a long search, she found a now-discontinued Freudenberg product: a biodegradable Lyocell padding manufactured in Germany, developed, tested and praised, but never brought to market for lack of demand. The manufacturer's own verdict: no interest from the industry.
She had all product information – from care instructions to origin – screen printed directly onto the jacket, deliberately leaving out classic sewn-in labels, since these are not produced in Germany.
The project's one justifiable exception, then, is the padding: recycled fibres of EU origin. She dispensed with iron-on interfacing entirely, since no sustainable alternative existed.
Limited edition, handwork, transparency
Because material availability is limited, only 30 hand-numbered jackets of ALLES VON HIER exist, each made in Esther Perbandt's own Berlin atelier by her seamstress.
As a deliberate counterpoint to the industry's lack of transparency, Perbandt discloses not only all her suppliers, but the full costing of the product too.

China or Germany? A transparent CO₂ comparison
For ALLES VON HIER, Esther Perbandt deliberately and carefully calculated the CO₂ footprint of the logistics, setting it against a conventional production scenario in the Far East.
- China scenario: the jackets are produced in Shenzhen, and the finished goods are flown to Berlin.
- Germany scenario: all materials come from within Germany, delivered by lorry or freight forwarder, with manufacturing and sale taking place at the Berlin atelier – no further transport involved.
| Category | China scenario | ALLES VON HIER scenario |
|---|---|---|
| Place of production | Shenzhen, China | Germany + Berlin |
| Method of transport | Air freight | Lorry / freight forwarder |
| CO₂ emissions for 30 jackets | approx. 220 kg CO₂e | approx. 2.3 kg CO₂e |
| CO₂ emissions for 1 jacket | approx. 7.3 kg CO₂e | approx. 0.08 kg CO₂e |
This calculation covers only the transport of materials and finished goods, and excludes the radiative forcing effect.
The calculation covers only the transport of materials and finished goods; it does not include production processes, factory energy use or the manufacturing of the materials themselves. The comparison does not judge consumption as "right" or "wrong"; it simply shows how much climatic weight transport decisions carry on their own.
Editorial note: this calculation is conservative and excludes the so-called radiative forcing effect. Once that effect is factored in, air freight's climate impact is considerably higher.
