I grew up without a television until I was 13.

 

Instead, I had a huge box of costumes to play with—and that’s how I discovered what clothing can do for me: how slipping into different identities can make me feel stronger or weaker, unbeatable or vulnerable.

 

Already back then I knew I had to create my own outfits—something that makes me feel free and protected at the same time. Something like a real-life armor.

 

During my Masters in Paris, my professor kept telling me: “Please, Esther, only design the garments you want to wear yourself. Nothing else. Then you will be successful.”
I didn’t believe her. I thought it was strange advice—for many, many years.

 

Until one day, it clicked.
